Xilinx, Inc. invented the field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Founded in 1984 in San Jose, California by Ross Freeman, Bernard Vonderschmitt and James Barnett, Xilinx shipped the first commercial FPGA, the XC2064, in 1985 and grew into the largest supplier of programmable logic. AMD acquired Xilinx in 2022, and its products continue as part of AMD's adaptive and embedded computing business. Xilinx product families include Spartan and Artix FPGAs for cost-sensitive designs, Kintex and Virtex FPGAs for high performance, Zynq-7000 and Zynq UltraScale+ SoCs with integrated ARM processors, Versal adaptive SoCs, and CoolRunner and XC9500 CPLDs. Xilinx devices are widely used in communications, aerospace and defense, automotive, industrial, test and measurement, and data center acceleration.
