Atmel Corporation was a San Jose, California semiconductor company founded in 1984, best known for its AVR 8-bit microcontrollers and ARM-based SAM MCUs. Atmel's ATmega and ATtiny chips became some of the most widely used microcontrollers in the world, powering everything from appliances and industrial controls to the Arduino development boards that introduced many engineers to embedded design. Beyond microcontrollers, Atmel produced serial EEPROM and flash memory (AT24, AT25 and AT45 series), maXTouch touchscreen controllers, CryptoAuthentication security ICs and wireless products. Microchip Technology acquired Atmel in 2016. Many Atmel part numbers remain in production under the Microchip brand, while older and discontinued Atmel parts are still in demand for maintenance and repair.
